Carnival ‘09 @Notting hill

Photographer’s Notes:
Notting hill is the largest street festival of is kind in Europe and is held each August Bank Holiday, since 1966, at Notting hill.

SO…..I went to the Notting Hill Carnival and it was MAD! Being a Notting hill virgin, I did not know what to expect. Just like the pictures I’ve seen its colourful, crazy and you are literally immersed in a sea of music.

I expected to take A BILLION photos but I underestimated the scale and distance between the static sound systems + I think I got there a little too late (around 3.00pm). Seems early but by the time you walk from any station around the zone to the heart of the carnival, given the crowd, an hour passed. To be honest I think I was a little to near the “END” of the route because I was heading to the Rampage sound system and got lost. Will plan an early start next time. And definately capture a lot more of the atmosphere and try and get some candid crowd shots which I missed this time round due to my 200mm lens failing at the last minute.

Apart from the crowds, It was a spectacular atmosphere with fabulous floats, lots of bubbly young people enjoying themselves and a quite astonishing number of young women (white and black) and men stuffing their faces with boiled corn and double servings of fried chicken and rice.

It was a brilliant day, thanks to the funky chunez and help from the police.
