London freeze ‘09

Photographer’s Notes:
They say time flies when you’re havin fun. October seemed to fly by but ended with a bit of wind rain and even snow!
Snow in the form of the 3 day London freeze event which took place between the 30th Oct - 1st Nov ‘09 at the iconic Battersea power station.
The London leg of the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup pulled in a massive crowd over that weekend transforming the Power Station into a buzzing mini ski resort, where the focal point was the 110m long purpose built ski jump. 2 live music stages, Main Stage Tent and the Relentless Live tent where in place for the non-skiers and music lovers alike to boogie down and rave to some big names including Orbital for the opening night and an utterly INSANE and astounding DJ set from Calvin Harris on Saturday. Sunday night saw the Friendly Fires absolutely rock the place out despite the cold, rain and numerous puddles with an impressive performance along with an incredible light show. More of the line-up here. Never knew mosh pits were so much fun. lol

Battersea power station felt like my home for the weekend, It all kicked off by 12 noon each day and I don’t remember having breakfast or lunch before heading down there on Saturday. Scattered around was a number of bars and caterers serving up the usual beers, mulled wine, water cheese burger, hot dogs and south American dishes at excessive prices typical of festivals. Leaving me wishing I had come a bit more prepared in the food department. Good thing was the chillout zones, where you can just kick back and chillax to chat to mates or check out the retail areas selling brands showcasing their latest stock and selling all the new season winter gear, charity stands, Nintendo wii booths , table football game areas.
The media team where great, providing info, free wifi and even some tea/coffee or relentless drink to sip on while editing pics. For pit access, the first three song rule applied but the Calvin Harris set was a fun, crowd-pleasing performance under a rich set of color washes and accents. I covered Dan black and the drum and bass sensations Chase and Status. For Chase and Status there was essentially zero light from the front on Chase, but ample backlighting gave me the freedom to overexpose massively. I think they wanted to dramatically light the drummer and Status but it was difficult getting a great shot of the energetic Chase with little front light. The lighting scheme for this set was pretty much an alternating mix green/blue and red/orange washes.
